Neon lighting is long-lasting and can be reused, making it environmentally friendly in some aspects when compared to LEDs. Proper maintenance, including replenishing the gas, allows neon signs to last a long time. For instance, neon signs installed over 30 years ago may still be in operation.

While LEDs may seem more energy-efficient in terms of electricity consumption, considering the entire product lifecycle, including production and disposal, the environmental impact is a complex matter. It's worth noting that some neon tubes contain small amounts of mercury, which requires careful disposal. Similarly, LEDs may contain toxic substances like cadmium, so environmental considerations should factor in how these materials are handled.

ネオン照明は長寿命であることが知られていて、さらに再利用可能である。適切にガスを入れて手入れをすれば、ガラスパイプ自体は何度も使用できる。腕の良い職人が作ったネオン照明は２0年以上経っても点いている。

消費電力だけを見るとLEDは優れているように見えるが、とても品質の良いLEDの寿命が約10年として、そのあとは再利用はされず廃棄される。ネオン管の中に微量の水銀が含まれることがあるから廃棄処理に関しては注意が必要である。同様に、LEDもカドミウムなどの毒性物質を含む。いずれにせよ照明がどのように廃棄されるかは知っておくべきだ。製品の生産から廃棄物の処理までを総合的に考えた場合、もしかしたらネオンの方が環境にも良いんではないかとも思う。
